Course Description
The CPC50210 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) qualification provides you with the practical and management skills to become a builder, whilst meeting the needs of builders and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses.
Building contractor licensing varies between states and territories and additional requirements to attainment of this qualification may be required. Please refer to the links below for state specific information.
Course Overview
The course program has 18 units of competency, comprised of 13 core units and 5 elective units, to be selected from the list below. The training and assessment leading to recognition of skills for this course must be undertaken in a real or very closely simulated workplace environment. You will need to be working in the building and construction industry on a worksite to be able to learn and demonstrate competency.
Lessons are presented online, face-to-face or a blended mode of delivery by highly qualified building trainers with many years of experience as successful building contractors. Our experienced trainers will assist you with a program that covers all aspects of low and medium rise building to assist you in reaching your goals as a building professional.
The training and assessment strategy has a strong focus on enhancing the individual’s knowledge required to enter the construction industry in management level roles such as Construction Manager, Project Manager, Estimating Manager or Owner Manager of a trade business related to the construction industry.

Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
The qualification has core unit of competency requirements that cover common skills for the construction industry.
The construction industry strongly affirms that training and assessment leading to recognition of skills must be undertaken in a real or very closely simulated workplace environment and this qualification requires all included units of competency to be delivered in this context.
Completion of the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (ASCC 2007) is required before entering a construction work site. Achievement of unit CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry covers this requirement.

In WA there are a number of licence types, however the two main types are:
- Licensed Building Practitioner – Practitioner registration is for individuals. It allows a person to be the nominated supervisor of a registered building contractor and to use the title ‘registered building practitioner’. A practitioner may not provide building services directly to another person.
- Licensed Building Contractor – Contractor registration is for individuals, partnerships and companies that intend to trade as builders.
Within these categories, there are a number of sub-categories of licence type. Before you apply, please ensure you research and investigate the best category to match what you are wanting to use your licence for.
Requirements to get your builder’s registration in Western Australia
For each type of registration in WA, you will need to meet the following criteria:
- Experience (between 5 – 7 years, depending on licence sub-type)
- Formal qualifications related to the class of licence you are going for
- Must not have been disqualified from practising trade, occupation or business in Australia
- To demonstrate possession of sufficient financial resources
